As visions of the unknown body emerge

ROOM SHEET

Motivated by a need to connect with my embodied self, my practice seeks to express that which cannot be expressed in language. Through monotype printmaking and collage I navigate the desire and sensation that exists in the subterranean undercurrent of the body. The immediacy of monotype enables my search for that something that I can’t quite name, that I don’t quite know, but feel as a distant echo. It resides somewhere in the liminal space between dreaming and waking, an unintelligible vapor, just past the boundary of my corporeal self.

When I work I proceed intuitively, in an attempt to connect with and capture something of my embodied self, something that I hope still exists, despite the conditioning processes of education and socialisation. The paper matrix acts a tabula rasa, through which my intellect dissolves and visions of the unknown body emerge. Such visions never amount to more than partial representations, rudimentary impressions that construct, falter and collapse. Form, therefore, remains unstable and incomplete and I have to learn to be comfortable in that lack of resolution.
