Catherine Anselmi
Geological Thinking
Catherine Anselmi is known for the use of deep-time materials such as clay, fossils, and rocks.
Geological thinking, emphasising time and narrative, is a cornerstone of her art practice. The crystallisation of time in geologic processes, through the bending and folding of rock and lithosphere’s slumping and peeling, permeates her work, offering insights into our existence and challenging conventional ethics of human life. Taking the world’s material phenomena as knots in a vast network of agencies that can be “read” and interpreted as forming narratives and stories, she explores the interface of Life and Nonlife, taking geology as the substrata of all life.
