ROHINGYA: Refugee Crisis in Colour

The Amnesty International NSW Youth Network have teamed up with Ali MC to bring you the ROHINGYA: Refugee Crisis in Colour. 

In 2016, Ali MC visited Rohingya refugee and internally displaced peoples’ camps in both Myanmar and Bangladesh. His aim was to photograph Rohingya people, document their living conditions and better understand the events that forced them into this situation. Unlike the photojournalism of poverty and angst, Ali MC also wanted to portray Rohingya as a people with pride and determination, despite their adverse living conditions. The portraits included in Rohingya: Refugee Crisis in Colour accomplish just that - strength and resilience captured on camera.

The ongoing genocide of Rohingya people in Western Myanmar (formerly Burma) remains almost ignored by world media. Displaced from their homes, attacked by the military, interned in refugee camps and driven across the border into neighbouring Bangladesh, the Rohingya have become known as one of the world's most persecuted people.

Amnesty International has gathered extensive, credible evidence implicating Myanmar’s military Commander-in-Chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, and 12 other named individuals in crimes against humanity committed during the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya population in northern Rakhine State. The comprehensive report, “We Will Destroy Everything”: Military Responsibility for Crimes against Humanity in Rakhine State, Myanmar, calls for the situation in Myanmar to be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and prosecution.

The exhibition opening will be on the 24th of July at 6pm, and will include key note speakers, including Ali MC himself. The exhibition will continue to run until the 28th of July.
