Mark Gowing
Division
Mark Gowing’s Division utilises segregations of space dictated by grids of intersecting lines. The intersections are marked with black circles whose sizes are governed by the space available. As the grids spread across multiple sheets the circles alter in size to remain within the edges of the space. The resulting frequencies create shifting patterns and tensions through subtle changes in the mathematics of each grid. In these undulating zones of dots we can see the delicate fluctuating relationships of individuals, cultures and galaxies.
Mark Gowing (b. 1970) is an artist working on Gadigal/Wangal country, Sydney,Australia. Through a practice spanning more than 35 years Gowing has developed a personal inquiry into the poetry of form, grid and rhythm that he investigates using a variety of mediums, found materials and abstracted applications of text. Gowing’s practice centres around the conceptual understanding of languages – graphic, written, oral or cultural. He employs rhythmic and textural interventions to elegantly abstract our agreed visual dialects, questioning our innate understanding of images, form and reading. His works often feature gestures of recontextualised form that create tensions in frequency and suggest alternatives to inherent narratives
