EDUARDO WOLFE-ALEGRIA
Enchanté (Pleased to Meet You)
In Enchanté (Pleased to Meet You), Wolfe-Alegria proposes an animistic framework as one with the potential to redefine our relationship with the non-human world. To do this he reimagines the Deep Space as a storeroom in which discarded domestic objects transform themselves into anthropomorphic fungus-like forms, expressing a kind of camp, subjective interiority. Their ornamented forms might recall the mythical fates, a coven of witches, or a troupe of Drag Queens.
They also recall the mycorrhizal network, an underground network of fungi which connects individual plants together. In the installation this network functions as a metaphor for material connectivity – a fluffy throw, may have once been a field mushroom, or a witch.
