Pretty in Pink
Pretty in Pink explores the movement of bodies through space, our perception of what space is and how it can be used. It is contrived as an overtly artificial environment with a naturalistic softness, using objects found in the space and the existing services as design queues for the installation, incorporating the fabric of Museum Space into the work.
The viewer is invited to consider how they move through the gallery space during the show, and reflect on how they might travers otherwise.
This show is about Museum Space, both physically and conceptually. The walls, floor and roof that surround the show enclose exhibition, utilitarian, functional and transitional space. Before a gallery it was a garage, and before a sweatshop, each with bodies moving and interacting in various ways through time. The show endeavours to find beauty in the banal and celebrate the exposed utilitarian systems that have supported Museum Space through its many lives.
This exploration is in response to and catalysed by a broader awareness of our environment in general; a growing concern for humanity's ability to voraciously sacrifice the natural in favour of man-made. What will the spaces we occupy look like in the future should humanity succeed in its vendetta for consumption.
The show is an encouragement to bring awareness to consumption, throw-away culture, to prioritise reduction and reuse, and to celebrate the natural.
KAD Collective is the creative pairing of KAH Concepts (Kate Harding) and DLA (Darren Livings). As architects by trade they hold environmentally responsible design at the core of their practice. The duo have enjoyed collaborative working in a number of different environments over the years. This is their first show together.
